Béchamel Sauce Recipe

 

Ingredients

 

Makes 3 cups/750 ml

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose/plain flour

  • 3 cups/750 ml milk

  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

  • 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg (optional)


Method:

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Add the flour and cook for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

  2. Remove the pan from the heat and add the milk all at once. Stir well then return to the heat.

  3. Season with the salt and pepper and add the nutmeg, if liked.

  4. Bring to a boil and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly. If any lumps  form, beat with a wire whisk until smooth.
