The Chinese
very rarely eat desserts, reserving them for banquets,
formal dinners, or one of the many festivals that the
Chinese celebrate.
Fresh
fruit in season is a good choice for people who
like to finish a meal with something sweet. Fortune
cookies are always baked commercially and are available,
in packages, fro Chinese specialty store. Moon cakes,
which are also available from stores, are never prepared
at home as they are time-consuming and require a long
list of unusual ingredients. The cakes are filled with a
lightly sweetened, rich-red soybean paste and are
exchanged as gifts at the Moon Festival, during
September.
Fruit
ices are another suitable dessert for a Chinese meal.
Marco Polo was introduced to these on his voyage to
China and brought the idea back to the Western world.
Many
oriental fruits are available canned and may be served
individually with ice cream or combined for a fruit
salad. The most popular are lychees, longans, rambutan,
mangosteen, mandarin quarters and jackfruit.
